These Regulations (often abbreviated to LOLER) place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. This includes all businesses and organisations whose employees use lifting equipment, whether owned by them or not. In most cases, lifting equipment is also work equipment so the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) will also apply (including inspection and maintenance). All lifting operations involving lifting equipment must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner.

LOLER also requires that all equipment used for lifting is fit for purpose, appropriate for the task, suitably marked and, in many cases, subject to statutory periodic 'thorough examination'. Records must be kept of all thorough examinations and any defects found must be reported to both the person responsible for the equipment and the relevant enforcing authority.

What you should do

If your business or organisation undertakes lifting operations or is involved in providing lifting equipment for others to use, you must manage and control the risks to avoid any injury or damage.

Where you undertake lifting operations involving lifting equipment you must:

 • plan them properly
 • using people who are sufficiently competent
 • supervise them appropriately
 • to ensure that they are carried out in a safe manner

wins Tractor of the Year 2021

Massey Ferguson, a worldwide brand of AGCO (NYSE:AGCO) is delighted to announce the MF 8S.265 Dyna E-Power Exclusive is the winner of Tractor Of The Year 2021. This prestigious award, judged by a jury from 26 European countries, was presented at a special Tractor Of The Year 2021 fully digital event ceremony, on 18th December.

“Everyone at Massey Ferguson is overjoyed to receive the ultimate honour of Tractor Of The Year 2021,” says Thierry Lhotte, Vice President & Managing Director Massey Ferguson, Europe & Middle East. “With the MF 8S Series, we set out to define a new era, not just for Massey Ferguson, but also for tractor design and, of course, our customers.

“This prestigious award recognises how Massey Ferguson is defining a new era in straightforward and dependable tractor design. At the same time we are delivering an enhanced user experience and providing our customers with the benefits of connectivity and smart farming technology for a sustainable future,” he adds.

The Tractor Of The Year 2021 award is a new addition to the MF 8S trophies cabinet, as the MF 8S digital launch even won the Gold Medal Award in the category “Best Use of Digital Technology” and the Silver Medal Award as “Best B2B Digital/Hybrid Event” at the Best Event Award Italy 2020 as well as Gold Medal Award in the category “Digital Event” and the Gold Medal Award as “Best B2B Digital/Hybrid Event” at the Best Event Award World 2020, giving credit to Massey Ferguson’s shows and events strategy initiated back at EIMA 2018 blending physical presence and digital capabilities.

Award-winning technology

The MF 8S.265 Dyna E-Power Exclusive, heads the MF 8S Series, which includes four models from 205hp to 265hp, all offering 20hp of extra power with Engine Power Management.

Completely new, the MF 8S Series introduces novel, innovative designs in every area – engine, cab, transmissions and driveline as well as with new controls and connectivity. Equipped to a high standard, it comes with different specification packages, which offer great value for money, ensuring owners only pay for what they need.

Setting the tractors apart is the unique Protect-U design, with its 24cm space that separates the engine from the cab and insulates it from noise, heat and vibration.

Industry-leading cab

Its industry-leading, four-pillar cab is the quietest on the market, at only 68dB, with a distinctive inclined windscreen providing ultimate space and visibility. Inside it provides optimum control using the new Multipad control lever and armrest, along with connectivity for smart farming operations.

A new digital MF vDisplay, fitted to the right-hand pillar, replaces the dashboard and leaves just the steering wheel and Power Control lever to ensure exceptional visibility over the slim, wasp-waisted bonnet.

Complete connectivity is assured with MF Connect telemetry and Datatronic 5 terminal fitted as standard. There is also the option to use an extra Fieldstar 5 terminal to manage the MF Technologies Suite – including MF Guide, MF Section Control and MF Rate Control.

New highly efficient transmissions

Completely new, Dyna E-Power’s dual clutch technology combines the comfort of a CVT with the efficiency of a semi-powershift. This reduces power loss by 26% at higher speeds, saving up to 5% in fuel.

Alternatively, the new Dyna-7 semi-powershift is also available on the MF 8S range and offers 28 forward and reverse speeds. With the same easy operation and reliability of the renowned Dyna-6, it delivers one extra speed with smoother shifting and is also now 15% more efficient.

Built on a 3.5m wheelbase and with a strong, new rear axle the MF 8S delivers 10% more tractive power. With powerful new hydraulics and PTO, it delivers higher performance, operate more efficiently and cut costs. MF 8S Series tractors can also be fitted with rear tyres up to 2.05m diameter (R42), including the exclusive option of the latest VF650/75 R42 Trelleborg TM1000 PT.

Superb specification choice

The award winning MF 8S Exclusive specification is a comprehensive package providing operators with exceptional comfort and ease of use, as well as genuine performance enhancing features to increase productivity and efficiency.

Exclusive models are available now. These will be joined by the Efficient versions in early 2021, along with the option of a Dyna-VT CVT transmission for all models later next year.

<![CDATA[Massey Ferguson Baler testimonial]]> https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/massey-ferguson-baler-testimonial https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/massey-ferguson-baler-testimonial Tue, 01 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 A Somerset-based agricultural contractor says he is very pleased after swapping the fifth in a line of Welger round balers for the latest Massey Ferguson version last year.

Trading as Darren Hobbs Agricultural Contracting and based near Taunton, Darren Hobbs set up his contracting business in 2004. He specialises in lime and fertiliser application for farms within a 50-mile radius, and for the rest of the year he bales and wraps hay, silage and straw for farmers locally, and cuts hedges and verges.

“Contract baling is a competitive market, so having a baler which can handle crops in the widest variety of weather conditions is essential,” he explained. “It has to be fast and reliable, and produce good bales of consistent size and density.”

Darren’s first round baler was a belt type variable chamber model, selected because his customers wanted different sized bales depending on the crop type. It proved unreliable and was quickly changed for a fixed chamber baler from a different manufacturer which was better, but it didn’t satisfy the bale size requirements of many of Darren’s customers.

Welger impressed

In 2008, Darren bought his first Welger 435 from a local dealer. “After the problems with our first variable chamber baler I had promised myself I would never buy another with belts, but we knew the dealer as he supplied our tractors, and he convinced us to try the Welger when we looked at them on his stand at a show,” he explained. “We had a demonstration and were extremely impressed by the rate of work, the bale quality and the general design so we placed an order, then kept the baler for two years during which it reliably made up to 8,000 hay and silage bales annually, as well as 1,000 straw bales.”

The Welger baler was replaced by another of the same model, but with a 17-blade chopper rather than the previous 13-blade unit along with several other upgrades, and Darren continued updating his balers every two years, eventually replacing his 435 with a 445 model in 2017. “The only problems we have experienced have been minor, including a few bearing failures which are to be expected considering the wet conditions we work in from time to time,” he said. “We have always had balers with choppers although demand for chopped silage varies. A few years ago, everyone wanted grass chopped as it was baled, and now only a few customers request it. I continue to be impressed by the work rate, and although comments are made about new balers entering the market and their high operating speeds, I don’t think any really out-perform the Welger, especially in difficult conditions.”

Faith in brand

In spring last year, the Welger 445 was due for updating and, following AGCO’s acquisition of the Lely-Welger forage division, Darren had the choice of purchasing one of the remaining stock of Welger balers or the new Massey Ferguson version. “We run three Massey Ferguson tractors, all with loaders, and have a good relationship with Medland Sanders and Twose Ltd (MST), the local main dealer,” he explained. “I looked at the new Massey Ferguson balers and liked the design which obviously retains all the best points from the Welger models but includes practical improvements too. We chose a Massey Ferguson RB4160 V variable chamber model with an Xtracut 17-blade rotor and air brakes, which arrived in time for the 2019 silage season.”

Dealer view

Matt Curtis is the area sales representative for MST and looks after Darren’s account. “There are a lot of Welger balers in our trading area and it’s an excellent brand with a strong reputation,” he explained. “Having such a superb line-up of round balers to offer in the Massey Ferguson range is a huge benefit, and we have customers for both the fixed and variable chamber types.

“I know that after many years operating Welger balers, Darren is delighted with his Massey Ferguson and I believe that with AGCO’s ongoing investment in research and development, our grassland machinery range will continue to improve.”

Successful first season

During the 2019 season the RB 4160 V made approximately 8,000 bales. The variable chamber can be set to make bales from 0.7–1.6m diameter and Darren said that his customers usually specify bale sizes of 137cm for silage, 137–152cm for hay, and 160cm for straw. “Sharing the Welger design, it performs as well as expected in a wide range of operating conditions, the drop-floor is a big advantage, and bale formation is excellent, no matter how wet or dry the crop,” added Darren. “Bale size doesn’t vary once it is set, and the improved rear door latching system helps achieve consistent, dense bales even in dry straw.”

Net application is also described as excellent, and each time the bale size is altered the Welger-based Massey Ferguson baler adjusts the net feed automatically to suit. Darren said he usually sets it to apply 2.5 layers of net, and when coverage is checked it is always spot-on.

Improvements highlighted over the baler’s Welger predecessor include the control box which allows more adjustments to be carried out from the tractor cab. Darren said the pick-up is also improved and whereas the Welger’s tine bars moved after a period and required re-adjustment, those of the Massey Ferguson have remained in position. He said the new baler is also much quieter and the significant difference is apparent from inside or outside the cab.

Ideal combination

Lack of grass this year meant the baler made fewer bales, but it has continued to impress with its rate of work and bale quality, and Darren said its operation has been made easier following investment in a new Massey Ferguson 7726 S Dyna-VT Next edition tractor, with infinitely variable speed control allowing the baler’s rate of work to be precisely matched to conditions.

“Massey Ferguson’s large square balers have always had a good reputation, and I believe the Welger-based round balers will prove equally successful,” added Darren. “I was also pleased to learn that the latest tedders incorporate Lely’s legendary hook tines, so this will be considered an option when my current tedder is replaced.

“The new baler performs well and is reliable, it makes excellent bales, and back-up from the MST team is very good too, so my next baler will definitely be another Massey Ferguson from the same dealer,” he confirmed.

<![CDATA[National Apprenticeship Week]]> https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/national-apprenticeship-week https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/national-apprenticeship-week Thu, 06 Feb 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Title

This week is National Apprenticeship Week and we’re proud to be part of a forward-thinking scheme that promotes an investment in our UK workforce.

For years MST has understood the value of apprenticeships but this is truer today than ever before. With such a shortage of skilled workers out there, it makes sense to ‘grow your own’ in order to retain the level of expertise our customers expect. What better way to do this than to invest in an apprentice who will hopefully develop a loyalty and respect for the company and its core values.

As many of our technicians have been with us between 10 to 40 years, we can ensure that we do not lose this vast amount experience as they mentor our apprentices to eventually pass the baton on. Through their mentorship, our apprentices learn a range of innovative skills and techniques that will set them apart from the competition, helping them to embark on a long and successful career within Land Based Engineering.

The career prospects for a qualified Land Based Engineer are varied, with a progression route within engineering itself or it may even lead beyond the workshop, with some who have successfully moved into workshop management or even sales. The knowledge that is gained through an apprenticeship is widely recognised throughout the industry and can open many doors to advance your career.

With this in mind MST places a real focus on respect and support for our apprentices to ensure they feel valued and want to continue their career with us as they become qualified. We listen to what they want to achieve and if we can support it then we will work hard to create a pathway for them to progress.

We currently have a number of apprentices across all 3 of our sites; Tiverton, Lee Mill and South Petherton, who are all highly committed to achieving their apprenticeship with us here at MST. We were fortunate enough to have recruited a full complement of apprentices last year and we hope to achieve the same level of intake this year!

So, if you’re currently looking for a work experience placement for June/July or you’re thinking about what you want to do when you’ve finished your exams this year, please get in touch as we would love to hear from you. You can join us for just a couple of days or a week to see if it’s something you would enjoy and who knows, you may be invited back for an interview!

Of course apprenticeships are no longer just for school leavers so if you fancy a change in direction and can demonstrate a passion for what we do then please send a copy of your CV and cover letter to [email protected].

You should aim to tell us a bit about yourself, your background and why you’re interested in a career in Land Based Engineering. We’re looking for a bit of passion and drive in our apprentices so don’t be afraid to show us what you know.

To help you decide if it could be for you, we asked one of our Year 1 Apprentices, Jordan Niven, to share his experiences as an apprentice so far...

“Since I started my job at MST, I have really enjoyed my time so far. The work I do includes some servicing, pre-delivery inspections, warranty work and repair jobs.

The depot I am working with is a great team! We can all have a good laugh together as well as getting the job done. They take the time to show me things if I have any questions and they are all very patient and willing to help.

I go to Moreton Morrell college in Warwickshire on block release and this is about 3 months of the year. The lectures go into a lot of detail and are very in depth on all topics but they make it easy to understand.

Land Based Engineering can be a very tricky job at times but if you have a genuine passion for tractors you will get a lot out of it.

In the future, I hope to stay on at MST to achieve all of my career goals.”

The evening kicked off with a hot buffet supper and drinks, followed by a presentation from Shaun Groom, Country Manager and Rodney Dingle Area Sales Manager both of Pottinger UK. The presentation covered the history of Pöttinger and some of the benefits of their unique product offering available through MST. There was also a range of Pöttinger equipment on display, with special once off deals available.

Whilst Pöttinger is a name more readily associated with grassland harvesting machinery in the UK, the last four decades have seen continuous development and expansion of its now extensive range of tillage equipment. Encompassing both traditional and minimal tillage equipment the range offers everything from mouldboard ploughs and power harrows, through to a wide range of innovative cultivators and more than 60 different models of seed drills.

For more information on the range contact your local representative.

The dealership will be run from the company's depot at Lee Mill, near Plymouth, and along with its Mid and East Devon franchise makes MST one of the largest Massey dealerships in the county.

As part of the expansion, MST has taken on two staff members from the previous franchise holder, welcoming Stuart Day as agricultural sales manager for South Devon and Andy Frampton as agricultural technician.

Graham Joll, MST's head of sales, said: "This is an exciting development for MST."

He added: "We recently invested £115,000 in a new lorry, based at the Lee Mill depot, to aid efficient delivery and collection of machinery across the county."

In 2012, MST was acquired by private investment business Longhouse Group with a view to investing in the company and contributing to growth generally in the region.

The new Massey Ferguson franchise and staff members, along with MST's appointment earlier in 2013 as main dealer for Pottinger in Devon, are in line with the group's expansion plans.

These include a purpose-built depot to support customers in South Devon with planning due to get under way this year.

<![CDATA[AGRICULTURAL OPEN DAY 28 NOVEMBER]]> https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/agricultural-open-day-28-november-1 https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/agricultural-open-day-28-november-1 Mon, 02 Dec 2013 00:00:00 +0000 More than 1,000 people attended MST’s recent agricultural open day to see the latest developments in agricultural machinery.

Customers, manufacturers and members of the public flocked to the company’s Blundell’s Road depot in Tiverton to get a closer look at machinery from well-known agricultural brands including Pottinger, Kubota, Honda and Twose and Massey Ferguson.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to display the new Massey Ferguson 5600 and MF 6600 tractor series – the first time these have actually been on show to the public,” said Group Marketing Manager, Rob Henry.

As well as being able to appreciate new and improved machinery and equipment, guests were treated to an open bar, trade giveaways and a hog roast that proved to be extremely popular. Devon Young Farmers Club assisted at the event which also raised money for various charities.

“Our open days in the past have combined agriculture with groundcare and exhibits by our sister company, Parkins,” explained Rob. “This is the first one that has purely concentrated on agriculture, and we were delighted to see so much interest.

“MST is celebrating a highly successful year. We have recently been appointed by Pottinger, new territory has been secured for Massey Ferguson in South Devon and our sales and support teams are growing,” he added.

Further, combined open days will be held during 2014 at the Tiverton depot and Lee Mill near Plymouth.

<![CDATA[MST SECURE POTTINGER FRANCHISE]]> https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/another-example-blog-post-with-a-long-title-1 https://www.mstgroup.co.uk/blog/another-example-blog-post-with-a-long-title-1 Sun, 01 Sep 2013 00:00:00 +0100 MST secure new franchise

Agricultural machinery dealer MST, has recently been appointed by grassland and tillage equipment manufacturer Pöttinger UK as the main dealer across Devon.

The Devon based company which can trace its agricultural trade heritage back to 1830, is gearing up to reaffirm its position as a major agricultural business in the region. Already dealers for top quality brand names including Massey Ferguson, Kubota and Honda, the company has forged long term relationships based on trust and traditional values with their customers.

The partnership will see MST, which has depots in Tiverton and Plymouth, carrying the full range of Pöttinger stock that includes all grassland and tillage products as well as the impressive range of Pöttinger forage wagons.

Manufacturing more than 28,000 machines annually from production facilities located in Germany, Czech Republic and its headquarters in Grieskirchen, Austria the family Pöttinger business celebrated its 140 year anniversary in 2011. Last year Pöttinger took the step of making a long term commitment to the UK market by establishing its own sales subsidiary Alois Pöttinger UK Ltd. “The UK is a key market for us, therefore to reflect its importance we have taken the step of forming our own subsidiary”, says Heinz Pöttinger (CEO). “Our motto “More success with Pöttinger” is more than just a promise to our customers”.

Speaking to Graham Joll, Head of Sales at MST he said, ”Pöttinger is an incredibly well-known and well respected machinery brand which we are extremely proud to now represent. The new partnership we have formed is very much in line with MST’s strategy to strengthen our agricultural positioning and offerings across the region. We will continue to invest and partner with quality manufacturers like Pöttinger where we can make a real difference to our customers productivity and profitability through innovation and quality products.”

“Considerable investment has been made at MST over the last 12 months in people and assets in order to strengthen our product support.”

“A new 24 hour call out service for parts and service is now in operation and with four new agricultural engineers joining us in recent months we are in a position to offer the very best in customer after sales support.”

Another recent addition to the MST family is a brand new MAN truck that represents an investment of over £120,000. “Our old vehicle had served us well over its 20 years of service but had limited carrying capacity for today’s modern machinery. These actions demonstrate MST’s commitment to the future of farming.”
